Ode to Sark

Hello,

I keep hearing or reading everywhere that Sark is a unique island. And it is definitely true. It depends on your personality only if it is positive unique or negative. To me it was always and always will be only positive.

I spent 6 months here. And those 6 months were full of beautiful memories.

When people are coming to Sark, most of them are very surprised that there are no cars, no street lights, the only transport you can see it’s tractors, horse carriages or bicycles, which in fact brings you more than one bruise on your body. Yes, it is old fashioned and I love it.

Forget about big super markets, shopping halls or any ‘big cities necessities’. Sark is quiet and natural. There is only 600 people living on Sark, which in summer can increase to 1000 or more due to seasonal workers coming to work on Sark.

It’s the last feudal state in Europe and it’s crazy that such a small island can be independent and have it’s own government, no police only constables instead. There are many discussions whether Sark needs changes or not. Personally I love Sark the way how it is. That’s what brought me here. Natural beauty and tranquillity.

I don’t need fancy hotels full of posh people who complain about being too dark on the nights.

I don’t need that wave of stupid tourists who come to enjoy full breakfast and fine dining style holidays.

Sark is muddy, dirty but so beautiful and unspoiled. And from my perspective I want it to be like that.

I look to these beautiful surroundings, stunning coast, caves and many more natural wonders and I smile. I love that Sark is still sort of untouched. No stupid safety regulations, happy children running around where there are no cars and traffic, happy cows spending whole day outside and resting in the sunshine. I love it!

I finished my work and my flight is on Friday. This summer again has been amazing. Swimming, seeing wild dolphins, going on a boat trips, running, cycling, water skiing, drawing, making earring, reading, writing, scuba diving, caving, eating fresh lobsters, visiting other islands, countless really countless days full of joy and happiness, many thanks to my personal Sark guide Dom.

It’s time for my new adventures. For now I am off to Lithuania. For a month. To relax, to reflect on my experiences and to prepare for my big trip in November.

See you somewhere over the rainbow,

Greetings from this beautiful and stunning island Sark,

Your Traveller.
