The Power of a Man

Yassu my sweet dear friends,

Do you believe in change?

I do. But oh my god how much doubt and frustration I had during the covid madness.

I think that there is hope for us. I also believe that one day we all gonna disappear from this beautiful planet, and there will be other life forms that perhaps can take more care of their home. However, in the meantime, I do my best to live harmoniously, to stand up and speak up for my values and ethos. I also try helping and volunteering as much as I can because this life, for me, is about that. Creating a change, creating lives we wanna live and helping the ones that can’t take care of themselves.

Most of you probably know that for these past 11 years, since I left Lithuania and started moving around, I have been visiting and helping at various animal shelters. Animal rights is a very touching cause for me, perhaps, once before I was one of them, perhaps it’s from my sensitive mom, or maybe I just really wanna help the ones that cannot help themselves.

So the past 3 weeks I have been extremely lucky to be volunteering at the Bronx Familia Animal shelter in Crete island. Living with no electricity, no wifi, in the hills of beautiful Crete, surrounded by barking but ohhh so lovely 160-170 dogs.

And you know what? This place was born because of one man. One single man. No money, no previous fancy job, no support from the government, no possessions, but true, honest and dedicated love and compassion for animals. This place now has around 170 dogs. Created by one single man. ONE. SINGLE. MAN. These 170 dogs that perhaps have been abused, injured, hated by some cruel people, nearly killed have survived because of one man. I am so extremely inspired in this place.

Nikos completely dedicated and sacrificed his life towards the animals. There is no ego, not a single selfishness involved. He owns nothing and ask for nothing and yet he is able to help so many beautiful dogs.

Of course, the shelters, however loved and caring they are could never replace a loving home for a dog. Here, dogs are at the kennels, and even with volunteers it is impossible to give a lot of attention to each of them every day. It’s a transition stage between saving the dog out of the street and looking for a new loving and caring home. So guys, let’s stop the dog breeders, we really don’t need more dogs in this world. There are so many loving, sweet, adorable, well behaved dogs that are waiting for somebody to adopt them.

I am so mind blown by Nikos love to the animals and all the work he does.

During those 3 weeks I have been here, we got 10 more new dogs. Left out, some ill and injured, some sad and frustrated and confused of what wrong did they do to get treated so badly.

I believe that every single person on this planet has something good inside, the true and beautiful spirit, but many of us grow up in dysfunctional families, abused homes and horrible conditions so we forget or not even know how to love every single being on this planet.

Let’s inspire each other, let’s do one good thing a day, let’s find a compassion for the ones that need it the most. So many of us have so many opportunities and potential to change this planet. And Nikos is just one example.

Believe in change, believe in compassion.

P.S. Forgot to tell you that in the meantime I fell in love with Greece and decided to stay here for a winter. Athens is where I am most likely stop and live for a bit. If you know anybody looking for a nice flatmate or a creative vegan cook, give me a shout 😊

P.P.S My camera's battery died so I had no chance to take pics of the beautiful dogs out there :(

With so much inspired thoughts,

Ligita

Greece, Confusion and Animals Love

Have you ever looked into the stray cats or dogs eyes and wondered how can they still look so loving?

How can you still feel love and loyalty towards somebody that represents the group of the ones that abused you?

Every time I volunteer at the animal shelter I feel so grateful for the people who take these poor abused of life animals and give them loving home...

But let's start with a funny story.

When people tell me they mix socks in the morning, or confuse their babies at the hospital, it always makes me laugh. I love confused and clumsy people, they give such a laughter in this world. But I never considered myself to be one of them. Until the day I happened to mix Skyros island in Greece with Syros. And they are not even nearby!

So just picture this. I arrive late night at this tiny quiet island of Skyros. I wait 10 minutes-20-30 for my hosts to pick me up and then after half an hour of being polite and pretending not to be impatient I call them to find out where they are. Signal is bad, I try calling, can't reach them, they try calling me, they can't reach me. Typical story of the person that doesn't own a smartphone. Well, after 2 hours of walking alone in the darkness and cold we all realised I am on the wrong island! What the heck. Well, they say laugh when you are in trouble and things will be alright. When I say they, I mean myself. That's what I believe.

I found people who gave me a shelter for the night, they were calling their friends and relatives (it's a tiny island, finally something interesting is happening) telling how one confused lithuanian mixed the islands and were telling me that it's the sign and I must stay there instead. So for 3-4 days I managed to put myself around greeks, help with horses, learn few basic words and discover a beautiful island. Thanks Universe!

When I finally managed to get to the right island I got surrounded by such love and affection of beautiful Syros cats. I always considered myself more a dog person but here I happened to truly see beautiful personalities and fall in love with cats too.

Every day my animal gurus were teaching me how to appreciate each moment and fully experience it. How to adapt to each situation and don't dwell on the past or future. They also taught me love and affection.

I meowed a lot for the pats 3 weeks. I also met wonderful dedicated people who put animals first than themselves. Absolute respect to them. My heroes really.

I ate shit loads of feta and made sure I have my extra insulation for this coming winter and I even started rapping. Ha!

Don't worry I still had the days when I felt like I am not good enough or hated some things. I love rainbows but I love darkness too.

And I fell in love with Greece. The place in Europe where they still smoke in the post offices or other places while the law prohibits. The country where restrictions of our so called organised system is not there yet and I love that. I mean, check this out, while I was sitting in the bus, the bus driver suddenly stops on the random road, gets out of the bus, walks to the field and takes few pictures from his cellphone of the cute horse in the field, then comes back and drives on as nothing happened. Really?! That's how you celebrate life. In my opinion at least.

Next place-ski resort in France. You will find me snowboarding somewhere. Get in touch if you are around.

Love,
